Ikuko/Featherine getting introduced most likely ahead of schedule (thus Ange’s entire presence in an arc where she doesn’t really do much) and dialing up the meta commentary on storytelling techniques, tropes, characters, creating mysteries and such, and everything to do with the Love Trials from those goddamn twins were probably not pre-planned either. BATTLER attempting to ressurect Beato only to create Chick Beato instead and feeling anguish over their relationship not being the same was likely inspired by Ryukishi missing BT and finding that sharing his stories with other non-BT colleagues wasn’t the same as what he’d lost. Both EP6 and EP7 center heavily around dealing with the fallout of a loved one passing away (Beatrice in both cases). But with the remaining three arcs, how they got effected becomes very easy to spot once you’re aware of BT’s death. EP5 turned out so great because it’s the only one that was fully planned out and largely finished in terms of the writing process by the time of BT’s sudden death (he died in July of 2009 - EP5 then came out the next month). Not only that, but as classified under Creator Breakdown, following BT’s death, Umineko took on a notably different tone and direction from EP6 onwards. Higurashi is an amazing story and I really recommend it! Whether you choose manga, anime or vn, it's very good! You have to check out the main parts before though. There are also a lot of extra parts of Higurashi series (visual novel, anime and manga) like Kizuna, Outbreak, Reiwa, Oni and more. There's ongoing manga adaptation of this part called Higurashi no naku koro ni gou and Higurashi no naku koro ni meguri and it's waaay better. Aaand then we have 2020 sequels: Higurashi no naku koro ni gou and Higurashi no naku koro ni sotsu. There are manga versions of those arcs and they're very good! Then there are some extras, Higurashi no naku koro ni rei and Higurashi no naku koro ni kira which are a mix of good episodes and awful fanservice episodes. The first anime (called just Higurashi no naku koro ni) is also known as question arc and the sequel (Higurashi no naku koro ni kai) covers answer arcs. My introduction to Higurashi was 2006 anime and it may not be the best adaptation according to some but it is iconic and has an awesome soundtrack. Of course I would really recommend reading Higurashi no naku koro ni visual novel but it's very long and pacing can be kinda slow at the beginning. Still, the most of the anime viewers who also know the Visual Novel and the manga, agree that the opening and the ending are one of the few great things of the anime. The only noteworthy bit is the one at the end that shows two empty chairs, then Battler and Beatrice on them, then they disappear from them. The ending also has a beautiful music, through the visual, after a quick panning of a long chessboard, is mostly of scenery which don’t really match the song in any way. Although the visual might remember the opening of a visual novel (but this series had birth as a visual novel so it’s fitting) the images often well match with the rhythm and the words of the song, creating an iconic opening many love. Although the opening is the same through all the episodes, the visual changes 4 times, so that in a way the 4 arcs all have visually different openings, though sometimes the differences aren’t that radical. I love the opening, the mixing of Italian text and Japanese one, Shikata Akiko’s voice so perfect as she sings this.
